“Chokes”

The North Star Chapter gathered once again for its annual spring banquet. This was a time to relax, enjoy a catered dinner, visit and laugh. Ron Vossler, our featured guest speaker, was successful in making everyone laugh with his "Chokes” presentation. "Chokes" is how the old German-Russians said "jokes".

Ron Vossler, is a Senior Lecturer at the University of North Dakota English Department, as well as well as a free-lance writer and researcher. His education includes a B.A. in Anthropology and an M.A. in English. A native of Wishek, North Dakota, Vossler has received various honors, including the John Hove Creative Writing Fellowship, UND'’s Maxwell Anderson Award for "outstanding achievement in arts and letters", along with several national awards for the two documentary film scripts which he has authored. His writing has appeared in magazines, journals, and anthologies. His most recent book, published by NDSU Libraries is "Not Until the Combine is Paid, and Other Jokes from the Oral Traditions of the Germans from Russia." He is currently working on a book about the letters written in Russia and sent to the Dakotas in the 1920's and 1930's, titled, "Sorrow Song: An Odyssey

Through Ethnicity, History, and Hope." Ron will be talking about the humor of the Germans from Russia’s experiences and stories that are usually based on fact. Join the chapter in a social hour, followed by dinner, and top off the evening with a delightful presentation of light hearted “chokes” that are sure to make you chuckle.
