Glueckstal Colonies Research Association Update
November 16, 2002
The North Star Chapter was pleased to welcome Margaret Freeman to the November meeting. Margaret addressed Glueckstal Village Research.
The Glückstal Colonies Research Association (GCRA) was founded in January 1986 by Margaret Freeman and Carolyn Wheeler, aided by consultation with Art Flegel and Gwen Pritzkau. GCRA is a nonprofit organization researching family histories of the German colonists living in the Black-Sea colonies of Glückstal, Bergdorf, Kassel, Neudorf and their daughter colonies. Margaret says: “In the past fifteen years I have become increasingly busy and know very little about life beyond the Glueckstal Colonies.”
Margaret is a midwest product, born in Iowa, "schooled" in various localities, and now lives in Southern California. She has been married to Bob Freeman for 50 years, and they are the parents of two sons. “We now have two grandchildren under the age of two. We have waited a long time for the grandchildren, and they are a welcome distraction from time at the computer.” Margaret was honored to receive the AHSGR Distinguished Service Award in 1997 (see the AHSGR Journal, Fall 1997). Besides having served on the AHSGR International Board of Directors, Margaret is a village coordinator and co-chairperson of the village coordinators. She has served at the chapter level on the California District Council and belongs to several Southern California chapters. Click on the photos to enlarge them.
