“Black Sea & Volga German Colonists: The Same, Yet Different or A Fleischküchle is Not a Kraut Runza”
The North Star Chapter had the good fortune to host Lew and Dona Reeves Marquardt with their unprecedented workshop drawing contrasts and parallels between two major components of the unique Germans from Russia ethnicity. Part history lesson, part show, their workshop premiered at last summer’s GRHS national convention in Bismarck to packed houses. At once enlightening and engaging, their presentation was the talk of convention workshop devotees.
Dona Reeves-Marquardt, Ph.D., University of Texas at Austin, is Professor Emerita at Southwest Texas State University where she taught German language and literature many years. Primarily of Volga-German ancestry and hailing from Russell County, Kansas, she has published articles on the language, history and culture of Germans from Russia and has translated major works in that area.
Lew Marquardt, Ph.D, was born and raised in Linton, North Dakota, the eldest son of a German-Russian father and an Irish mother. He grew up among Black Sea Germans and spent his early years teaching instrumental music in South Dakota, and Humanities and Arts at Arizona State University at Tempe. After the death of his first wife he married Dona Reeves. Together they have traveled extensively in Germany and France seeking out ancestral villages, art museums, Fachwerk and the phenomenon of foreign culture. Lew has yet to discover his ancestral German village.
I'm sure many thought they pretty much knew everything about Volga and Black Sea Germans but this workshop probably had something new for everyone and was very well attended as the photos below illustrate.
