Games of our Ancestors by Jaci Williams

(aka The Games people play)

If you are old enough ... take a stroll with ... close your eyes ... and go back ... before the Internet... before SEGA or Super Nintendo ... way back ... and if you are not old enough to remember, too bad, 'cause you missed out on some wonderful memories......

We're talking 'bout hid and go seek at dusk. Simon Says, Kick the Can, Red light, Green light. Skates with keys, Jacks, Mother May I? Hula Hoops and sunflower seeds, Whist and Old Maid and Crazy Eights. Remember that? Not steppin' on a crack or you'll break your mother's back. Paper chains at Christmas. Remember lying on your back on the grass with your freinds and saying things like "That cloud looks like a ..."

And... with all our progress ... don't you just wish ... just once ... you could slip back in time and savor the slower pace ... and share it with our children.

Didn't that feel good, just to go back and say, "Yeah, I remember that!"

Jaci Williams discussed the various games that children played as well as some adult type games. Much of the research was done via the internet with handouts and descriptions of the games.. We learned about Sheepshead, or "Schafskopf" in German, an old card game that originated in Middle Europe in the mid to late 1700's.
