The smell of freshly baked bread wafting through the air...borscht cooking on the stove...homemade sausage sizzling in the pan...grebbel for dessert...and accordion music singing in your ears...No, this isn't a sweet dream from yesteryear, it was our third annual Harvest Festival!

The entire family had the opportunity to learn how to knead bread dough just like Grandma did. They also watched demonstrators prepare our special soup, borscht and stopped by the Grebbel booth for a slice of sweet heaven. Some tried their hand at stuffing homemade sausage, seasoned to perfection, or gave it your all as they used traditional tools to slice cabbage for sauerkraut.

After feasting on the culinary delights of our ancestry, everyone had the time to move on to the Folk Medicine booth to learn how to cure a sore throat, warts, or that nagging ringworm or stop by the Healing Touch practitioner's chair to see how German-Russian healing tradition continues in the 21st century.

A few took the time to test their skill at our outdoor Bunnock/Banoch field, the Volga German-Russian "bone game"; once you've thrown horse bones around, you'll never go back to lawn darts!

The backdrop for this scrumptious Harvest Festival extravaganza was a German-Russian meal of fresh sausage (imported once again, from Wishek, ND), sauerkraut, potatoes, specialty buns, pickled watermelon, pickles, and a variety of homemade fruit and custard kuchen. Meal tickets were bargain-priced at $5.00 and what a deal it was!
