"Understanding Our Heritage Through German Language Newspapers”

North Star Chapter 23rd Annual Spring Banquet

Held on Saturday, April 20th, 2002

Held at Oak Grove Lutheran Church, 7045 Lyndale Avenue South, Richfield

The North Star Chapter was pleased to have Cynthia Miller as the guest speaker at the 23 annual event.  A German-Russian descendant. Cynthia was born in Bismarck, ND, in 1969, raised in Beulah, ND, and is one of the youngest members of the Germans from Russia Heritage Society. The research for her presentation was done for her master's thesis in journalism from Iowa State University, where she graduated in 1999. Cynthia is currently a book publicist and writing instructor in Minneapolis.

Cynthia’s presentation, "Understanding Our Heritage Through Studying Newspapers”  addressed her research in German-Russian newspapers published in the Midwest during times of crisis in the first half of the 20th century. She will also talk about the value of studying immigrant press in understanding our heritage, and how this can be useful to interest young people in their heritage.
