Twas the night before Christmas and all through the house, not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse. That’s because they were all busy celebrating at the North Star Chapters annual Weihnachtsfest! The North Star Chapter welcomes the holiday season celebrating the foods of our ethnic heritage. The tables laden with Kuchen and Grebbel, Bierock and Knepfla and wide assortments of breads to pickled watermelons and beets traditionally shows the Germans from Russia’s true spirit of Christmas.Special Guest was Ruth Melcher of Edina, MN. Ruth who spoke about the book that she published this year, Borne on the Danube. The book is the story of her father, who was a Hungarian German drafted into the Hungarian Army during WWII. He served in a prisoner of war camp in Russia before coming to the United States and settling in Milwaukee. This story is very similar to our Germans from Russia and included a photo slide show when Ruth visited this Hungarian area several years ago.
