The North Star Chapter presented Charles Weisser on Saturday, May 3, at the United Methodist Church of Peace, Richfield, MN, in a portrayal of his great-grandfather, Gottlieb Weisser, who lived from 1840 to 1933. Through the portrayal Weisser provides an oral history of why our people left Germany to settle in South Russia. He tells about life in the Russian colonies, especially in the ancestral village of Glükstal. He then continues with why these people emigrated to America and about life on the early praire in McIntosh County, ND.
Charles Weisser was born and raised in Ashley, ND. His higher education credentials include BS and MS degrees in Education, and he served as an educator for 36 years. He is currently retired and resides with his wife Jan in Wausau, WI.
Weisser says of his portrayal now that he visited the Russian colonies in 1997, it takes on "more meaning because I can now visualize (the colony's) wide streets, the church, the fields adjoining the village, the Dniester River and the neighboring communities.
