A Genealogy Look

The North Star Chapter was pleased to present Allyn Brosz, well known to AHSGR and GRHS for his works and research on passenger lists. Allyn has also developed an expertise with federal land records and will present a second session devoted to this topic.
Allyn discussed his work concerning passenger lists starting at 10 a.m. Following a break for lunch, Allyn continued with his second discussion concerning federal land records.
Allyn Brosz is a native of Tripp, South Dakota (Hutchinson County), where he grew up on the farm homesteaded by his great grandfather, Adam Brosz. His father's ancestors all immigrated to the United States from the villages of Alt-Posttal and Neu-Posttal, Bessarabia. His mother's ancestors originated in the four mother villages of the Glueckstal colonies.
Allyn is a member of AHSGR, GRHS, the Glueckstal Colonies Research Association, and Palatines to America. He served on the AHSGR Board of Directors from 1988 to 1992, including two years as secretary. He has served as chair of the AHSGR Genealogy Committee and is currently a member of the GRHS Computer Committee. He has represented both AHSGR and GRHS on the U.S. National Archives Russian American Genealogical Archival Services Committee to explore procedures for acquiring archival materials from Russia and Ukraine. He is the AHSGR and GRHS village coordinator for Alt-Posttal, Bessarabia. Allyn has published a number of German-Russian genealogy articles in the AHSGR Journal and Clues, many containing extractions from passenger arrival lists, and has given genealogy presentations at the AHSGR national conventions and at the meeting of the Virginia chapter of Palatines to America. He is currently completing a history of the descendants of his Brosz great grandparents, which will be published in 2001.
Allyn is a graduate of the University of South Dakota (B.A. and M.P.A.) and the University of Oklahoma (M.A.) and studied at the University of the Saarland in Saarbruecken, Germany, in 1970-1971 under the auspices of a Fulbright-Hays study grant.
Allyn currently lives in Washington, D.C. where he is employed by Unisys, Inc. to support the Office of the Secretary of Defense in long-range budgetary planning and programming. He is married to Jill Burns.
