The Computer Corner

By Duane Stabler (dstabler@bigfoot.com)

This article marks the 4th of the articles as associated with the World Wide Web. My intent has been to provide you with sources of information that may assist in your genealogical research. From time to time, I do get some input from others that I find of great value because there are literally thousands of sites that exist and more are set up daily. So, here we go with a real mixed bag of WWW sites, which I hope you enjoy.

Bessarabia Web Site (http://www.bessarabia.com/) this is a recently established site that was set up by Marty McMahon and is another of his handy work. If you have family that emigrated from Bessarabia, are a member of the Bessarabia group or just have an interest, Marty has done a nice job.

German Newspaper Web Site (http://www.rhein-main.net/FNP-Online/Zeitung-3/lokalnnp-8.html) this list has recently been pointed out to me by Margaret Freeman. It’s in German so it can give you some opportunity to practice that reading. This information is located on Pixel but this allows you to get to it directly as pointed out by J. Meeuwig.

Canadian Obituaries Online Web Site (this site has not responded and may be disconnected) This site lists many Canadian provinces and apparently has linked them up to allow a search of obituaries within Canada. I will be revisiting this site but thought you’d like to know about it.

CA Vital Records Web Site (http://vitalrec.com/ca.html) is a source for California records but I found that I could access other states by changing the "ca" to another state. I tried " SD" and found the web site in Pierre on line. A further search and I found (http://vitalrec.com/index.html#usmap), which allows a full search of the USA.

Famous Germans from Russia Web Site (http://www-personal.umich.edu/~steeles/gerrus/) is a listing of famous and, perhaps, not so famous German Russians.

National Archives & Records Admin Web Site (http://www.nara.gov/genealogy/immigration/immigrat.html#where)) is a link to the US Government web site where you can inquire about records that may exist in the archives. I have not tried this method but suspect it’s a good way to go.

Electronics Discussion lists Web Site (http://www.ahsgr.org/listserv.htm) will help you establish links to various listserv sites. I often find new web sites by signing up and reading the message. Warning&ldots;you could end up reading a lot of mail.

Web Search Web Site (http://www.dogpile.com) If you need to use the Web to do a search for information, genealogy or other, try this method. It allows you to type in a few search words and the system looks for articles related to your query. Be specific or you might get thousands of sites to search.ie, don’t type in Germany or you’ll be overwhelmed.

Argentina Germans Who Disappeared Web Site (http://www.yendor.com/vanished/vanished/cels-list.html) connects you to the listing of people that disappeared during the dictatorship in specific years in Argentina. I doubt if the list is complete but it is interesting to read. A second address is (http://www.desaparecidos.org/arg/coalicion/des.html).

Well, I will end the article here and see I have lots of other sites so expect me back with more again.
