This is the 12th in a series of articles intended to make the user aware of various web sites and what they may offer. As usual, I have included a grab bag of stuff as I come across it.

Edited on 4/25/02 to eliminate broken website links.

Here is the URL of a website that looks interesting.  It contains some good data on US records sources, historical time lines, internet genealogy, plagerism, copyright, and other useful info. Besides all this, it seems to be an example of a nicely designed site. Learningcenter  http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~haas/learningcenter.html

Accessing biographical information regarding North Dakotans has just become easier with the release of the North Dakota Biography Index (NDBI) database by the Institute for Regional Studies at the North Dakota State University Libraries.  Searching the database will enable users to quickly determine which publication to consult for biographical information.  More than 138,000 biographical sketches are indexed; found in some 540 publications. The site can be found at http://dp3.lib.ndsu.nodak.edu/ndbi/.

I want to take the opportunity to mention two other NEW Rootsweb mailing list resources for Bavarian researchers to utilize.  One in particular specifically addresses a main problem for many English-speaking only Bavarian researchers: learning the "ins" and "outs" of Bavarian geography.  Below are the names and descriptions of the RootsWeb mailing lists (always free) as well as subscription links if you think you might like to join:

DEU-BAYERN. A mailing list focused on helping Bavarian researchers in determining the geographic locations of their ancestors. Additionally, the list will attempt to help researchers understand Bavaria's role in the unification of the German Empire during the 1800s and border shifts from the 1600s to the present day. The language for the list is English. http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/intl/DEU/DEU-BAYERN.html

BAVARIAN-ANCESTORS. Here is a mailing list for anyone with a genealogical interest in the state of Bavaria, Germany. The main focus will include all topics pertaining to genealogical research.  A secondary focus will be Bavarian history and other topics in support of an overall understanding of our Bavarian ancestors' way of life.

A variety of free translators.  Mediocre quality but useful. http://www2.genealogy.net/gene/www/abt/translation.html

Free translation service by people, from Arthur Teschler's German Genealogy site.
